Halloween is such a fun time of year in the classroom—but it can also get a little wild! That’s why I love having go-to activities that keep my 2nd graders engaged, learning, and having a blast at the same time. Whether you’re looking for a spooky STEM challenge, a festive math review, or a writing activity, these Halloween ideas are sure to make your October lessons a treat.
1. Project-Based Learning: Build a Haunted House

My students absolutely love this Haunted House Project Based Learning Project! It combines creativity, problem solving, and math all in one engaging project. Students plan and design their own haunted house, make decisions about rooms, decorations, and costs, and then share their spooky creations.
This activity ties in beautifully with standards for addition, subtraction, place value, estimating, and even writing when students describe and advertise their haunted house. It’s a great way to bring real-world learning into the Halloween spirit!
The PBL has various options for implementation but I personally use it for math centers, early finishers, and small-group (or independent) enrichment.
Your students will love becoming haunted house designers while sharpening their math skills. Teachers love it too—it’s easy to differentiate, no-prep beyond printing, and incredibly fun for the season!
2. Candy STEM Challenge

Bring some spooky STEM fun into your classroom with the Halloween Candy Town Shelter STEM Challenge! The day after Halloween can be a little rough—so why not turn that sugar overload into a learning opportunity? This activity gets everyone excited (even parents, who love seeing that leftover candy put to good use).
Students use the engineering design process to plan, build, test, and improve a shelter made entirely from candy. It’s hands-on, creative, and full of teamwork as they think like engineers while building with a festive twist.
When I did this with my students, the parents LOVED this project the most! I loved having the students bring in the additional halloween candy and for their students to use it in a creative way rather than eat it all. I received so many responses from parents of how creative, exciting, and fun this challenge was.
Tip: Tie it to your science standards or use it as a Friday fun activity!
3. Math Fun: Halloween Hidden Picture Boom Cards

Bring fall fun into your math lessons with this interactive Boom Deck bundle, designed for 2nd graders practicing addition and subtraction within 100! Each deck focuses on solving word problems—some with regrouping, some without—and every correct answer reveals a hidden fall-themed image.
It’s an easy, self-checking digital activity that students love during centers or for early finishers. It includes practice on addition to 100, subtraction within 100, and an addition and subtraction combo deck.
These decks are aligned to CCSS 2.OA.A.1 and make math practice festive, effective, and fun. Plus, you save when you grab the bundle!
4. Fall-Themed Proofreading Practice

If you’re looking for a quick, meaningful literacy activity that still feels festive, these fall-themed proofreading and editing cards are a perfect fit. Students practice editing short autumn paragraphs to find and correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar mistakes.
They’re print-and-go, making them easy to use for centers, morning work, or homework. They provide engaging punctuation and editing practice while helping students apply essential grammar skills. It also aligns with seasonal themes for added interest.
Simply print out the paragraph cards and hand them out to students for editing practice. They can work independently, with partners, or as a small-group rotation.
These cards make proofreading fun and purposeful, while helping students polish their writing mechanics during the busy fall season.
5. Fall Partner Plays for Reading Fluency / Readers’ Theater

If you’re looking to add a little drama (the good kind!) to your October lessons, try my Fall Partner Plays for Reading Fluency. These Readers’ Theater scripts make it easy to blend reading fluency, comprehension, and collaboration—all while having a little seasonal fun.
Each script comes in two differentiated levels (300L & 600L), so you can easily match students to the text that fits them best. Thee plays rhyme which add a playful element my students always enjoy.
There are 5 fall-themed scripts (like The Apple Orchard Mystery and The Great Pumpkin Mix-Up) with comprehension follow-up questions. It also includes easy differentiation with two levels per play
Students pair up to read their parts aloud, work on expression and pacing, and then discuss the comprehension questions together. It’s a wonderful way to build confidence, fluency, and speaking skills—plus it’s a classroom favorite every fall!
Whether you’re planning a full Halloween day of learning or just sprinkling in some spooky fun, these activities will help your students stay engaged and excited all month long. I’d love to hear which ones you try!
